New anti-immigration film . . . same anti-immigrant hysteria

As if our dosage of far right-wing media coverage wasn’t enough, Hollywood has decided to infiltrate our movie theaters. The popularity of 911 Cover Up on Google Video is countered by another 9/11 film at the box office. This weekend, the discussion (or really the lecture) of illegal immigration makes its way to our theaters.

I just saw an interview on Lou Dobbs Tonight with the producer of a new documentary that opens soon. The film is entitled “Border War: The Battle Over Illegal Immigration.” According to its producer, the film is an accurate representation of what illegal immigration is doing to the United States. Somehow I doubt the film coverage will be fair, especially when the movie follows a widow whose husband was murdered by an undocumented immigrant. Surely the loss of the husband was “real,” no doubt, but is the person who killed the husband really representative of the undocumented population? I place my good faith in the film’s producer to explore the answer without prejudice.

The film can be viewed in Burbank, California this Thursday. Afterwards, various theaters in Arizona, California, Texas, Washington, and Washington, D.C. will be showing the film.

Welcome back! Pero no te prometo nada.

Okay, so I know it has been a while since my last post. I had no idea my internet connection has been down for almost a year! I've been blogging all this time, but I thought the "Error: You are not connected to the Internet" pop-ups were just advertisements. I can't believe I lost most of my 3L writings! Rats! I guess there's no written proof that I spent the summer of 2006 studying for the Bar examination . . . except for the gashes in my eyes caused by extreme frustration.

Well, I have started work on my Immigrant Worker and Detainee Advocacy Project. One part of my project will deal with assisting immigrant workers in a variety of legal areas, but most crucially in labor and wage violations. The other part of my project will assist asylum applicants and detained immigrants, which will usually result in defending them in removal (deportation) proceedings. The funds that pay for my fellowship carry no restrictions; neither my host organization nor my fellowship organization receives federal grants. As such, I am free to work with people of all kinds, most notably undocumented immigrants.

I am thinking about restarting my blog, but I cannot in good faith make any promises as to how long this energy will keep. I definitely won't blog everyday, but I have been experiencing hilarious things since I moved to Toledo, and I just have to start keeping a record of all this stuff. It's too good to go undocumented . . .
